President of the foundation for the Safeguarding of Cultural Heritage of Rabat

Shared Perspectives on Living Heritage: Craftsmanship, Education and Intergenerational Dialogue

On the occasion of the 2025 International Day of Intangible Cultural Heritage, the Foundation for the Safeguarding of the Cultural Heritage of Rabat highlights the richness of living heritage and the essential role of its transmission between generations. This celebration showcases cultural and educational initiatives that honor artisans, youth and education as key pillars in safeguarding intangible heritage.

This occasion marks the publication of the proceedings of the workshop “Understanding Intangible Cultural Heritage: Definitions, Issues and International Framework”, organized within the Foundation Workshops program and followed by more than 500 participants online. The publication offers an introduction to key concepts and principles of living heritage, and brings together contributions from experts, institutions and communities committed to preserving and transmitting intangible heritage. It is now available online as an educational reference and capacity-building tool.

The Foundation also launches the podcast “Mlaalem” (“Master Artisan”), featuring conversations with five master craftspeople from Rabat specializing in Rabat embroidery (terz rbati), traditional tailoring, Rabat carpet weaving, zellige craftsmanship and traditional jewelry-making. Through their voices, the podcast celebrates the richness of Rabat’s artisanal heritage and showcases the living transmission of ancestral know-how. It is available on the Foundation’s website, Spotify, Apple Podcasts and Deezer.

In addition, the Foundation reveals a new season of the podcast “From Generation to Generation”, dedicated this year to traditional Moroccan games and produced with students participating in the “I Draw My Heritage” educational program. This initiative underscores the importance of engaging children in heritage preservation and fostering intergenerational transmission.

Through these complementary initiatives, the Foundation reaffirms its commitment to an educational and participatory approach to heritage, grounded in the belief that intangible cultural heritage is a living resource that inspires youth, enriches cultural dialogue and fosters a creative and responsible global citizenship.
